What is freeze-dried pet food?
Freeze-drying is a process of dehydrating materials by freezing them to -38 degree celsius and applying a vacuum of negative 3 atmospheres. Under such conditions, all the water sublimates from ice to dry vapour leaving a very dry product. Packaged well this product can stay without preservatives for upto 2 years. This process is commonly used in pharma industry and is the way astronauts carry food into outer space. Freeze-drying pet food is a way to process pet food - especially meats to retain their raw nutrition and make it easy to feed to your pets.
Why is freeze-dried pet food better than regular kibble?
Kibble: Assuming the same ingredients are used in both at a processing level kibble is manufactured with extrusion - a process where the materials are repeatedly heated to extremely high temperatures and pressures. This process denatures the entire ingredient and hence has to be artificially fortified. The other aspect being to form a kibble pellet, it is necessary to have starch as a component to hold the shape and hence most kibbles will tend to be carb loaded. Remember not all kibbles are equal - they will range from utterly terrible to some respectable ones. The main advantage is convenience of storing, feeding and shelf life.
Freeze-Dried Pet Food: Since this process works with no heat, it preserves the raw nutrition of the raw materials. The process also lends itself to high meats as there is no process requirement for starch and carbs. It does involve an additional step of rehydration before feeding which is a mild inconvenience at best. The process being slightly expensive will also come at a premium but the nutritional benefits far outweigh the incremental costs. This the closest you can come to feeding raw diets but with a lot of ease.
Is freeze-dried pet food same as dehydrated or air-dried pet food?
Air dried or dehydrated pet foods or meat treats are created by passing hot air over the products to remove the moisture. Since some heat is involved, the meats undergo caramelisation leading to a chewy texture and slight loss of aroma and nutrition. In processing classification of NOVA standards, air-dried will sit one step below freeze-dried products but still vastly superior to high processed foods like kibble.
How do you manage such long shelf life without preservatives?
There are different techniques for different products and processes. Freeze-dried products get their shelf-life thanks to minimum moisture and immediate packaging in a air tight packet. Retort on the other hand works on sterilisation where the wet food is first filled in special packets and then the packets are surrounded by steam. The heat kills all the microbes inside the sealed packet and hence we now have a long shelf life.
Difference between Pawr4Cats Carnivore Meals and FurFly?
Pawr4Cats is built on the philosophy of "we add nothing" - its just the mince of meats, organs and just a tad bit of essential vegetables to make a perfect carnivore meals for cat. FurFly walks a different path where slow simmered broth is added to the meats. The addition of a cooked broth is what makes FurFly a distinct meal and hydrating topper.
Are your recipes grain free?
Short answer - YES! Except one Rawr4Dogs balanced meal recipe which contains jowar or sorghum as a low glycemic index millet. Some dog recipes in future may start containing brown rice in small amounts. However we draw a full line with cats - where everything is not only grain free but also carnivore by design.
Where do you source your ingredients? Are they human-grade?
Our meats come from the local abattoirs and processing plants around Pune. Many suppliers are the same units which are certified to supply raw materials to the Indian Military. Our fish come off the west coast of India but again sourced locally from the Pune fish market. Our vegetables and other ingredients are also sourced fresh locally.
Is Petsaurus good for my dogs or cats?
We can shout to the moon and back that we are good, species appropriate yada yada. But so does every other brand. We have the cleanest labels on our products which declare recipes to the fullest. Read them, research them, ask chatgpt and let this convince you about what we do.
May cat refused one of your gravies. What do i do?
Cats can be creatures of habit, especially when it comes to food. A new taste or texture may take a little getting used to.
We recommend a gradual transition over about two weeks. Start by mixing a small amount of FurFly or Pawr Carnivore with your cat’s existing food, and slowly increase the proportion over time.
Give them time. They’ll get there. Probably on their terms.
Note: If your cat refuses food altogether for a prolonged period, or you notice any other signs of illness, please consult your veterinarian promptly.
My dog threw up or has an upset stomach after eating one of the products from Petsaurus.
A new food can take a little getting used to. Sometimes dogs eat too quickly, or their stomach simply needs time to adjust to a change in diet.
Follow the feeding guidelines on the pack and introduce Rawr4Dogs or FurFly gradually, mixing it with your dog’s existing food and increasing the proportion over time.
If your dog has repeated vomiting, severe or persistent diarrhoea, blood in their vomit or stool, refuses food or water, seems unusually tired, or shows signs of pain, stop the transition and contact your veterinarian promptly.
